The painting embodies the visual angle of the drunken sailor who is watching but is not present on the canvas. The spectator who is viewing the picture understands he is standing next to the sailor and feels invited to take the identity of the drunken sailor. Thus the viewer creates a relation between the internal space of the painting and the external physical world. In this way the painting opens itself to the public.
