Description

"The sorrow of Belgium", by Erik Pevernagie, oil on canvas, 100 x 80 cm

The individuation or the differentiation of social and ethnic groups in society can become predominant in some countries. Feeling a loss of identity and a lack of freedom of action, some entities may want to proclaim themselves distinct from other social groups, separate , autonomous or independent with own projects and political ideas.

A separation is always difficult and constantly creates scars of sorrow and regret. Everybody may agree upon the diagnosis but very often not about the therapy. It is precisely the therapy that is mostly very painful. Along with other European countries like Great Britain and Spain, Belgium is confronted with this problem.

Some parts of society feel that the rug is being pulled from under their feet. Some suffer from a sundown syndrome, fearing that, for them, the sun is going down for ever.

Phenomenon: Individuation or social differentiation.

Factual starting point of the picture: Bending person in sorrow
